SB 1000 Passes Appropriations Committee

SB 1000 Passes Senate Appropriations Committee

Senate Committee on Appropriations passed SB 1000, which would require warning labels on all sweetened beverages sold in California.

By Sergio Klor de Alva

On May 23, the Senate Committee on Appropriations passed SB 1000 (Monning, D-Carmel), which would require warning labels on all sweetened beverages sold in California. The bill passed on a 5-2 vote and will be heard on the Senate floor shortly.

The Sugary Drink Safety Warning Act would place this message on sweetened drinks containing 75 calories or more per 12-ounce serving: “CALIFORNIA SAFETY WARNING: Drinking beverages with added sugar(s) contributes to obesity, diabetes, and tooth decay.

The bill aims to curb the diabetes epidemic in the state, which is especially high among children and the state’s Latino population.
